Greek Language Its Dialects Translations and More

Being one of the oldest languages in the world, Greek has a rich vocabulary and boasts of a brilliant literature such as Homer's Iliad and more. It is spoken by more than 13 million people worldwide ranging from Greece and Cyprus where Greek is the official language to Azerbaijan, Turkey, Russia, Lebanon, Egypt and also in the US, the UK, Canada and various other countries.

Greek belongs to the Indo-European family of languages and has hugely contributed to the vocabularies of several languages including English. Greek language too has borrowed several words from different languages such as Turkish, Latin and Venetian. Various words in Modern Greek are derived from the ancient Greek but their meanings have changed drastically.

There are various dialects in Greek. Ancient Greek is divided into several dialects such as Ionic, Doric, Aeolic and many more. The earliest known dialect was the Mycenaean Greek. While Ionic dialect was used in Smyrna; Attic which was a sub-dialect of Ionic, was used largely in Athens. Doric was another dialect which was spoken in Sparta and Crete.

The Standard Modern Greek has evolved from the Southern Demotic dialect and is now used as the official language of Greece as well as Cyprus. The Greek language used in the urban parts of Greece is far different from the Greek used in the rural parts. Similarly the Greek language used by the Greek Diaspora in Turkey or the USA is again different. Therefore you have to first find out exactly what audience you are targeting and where it is located because Greek used in Greece is very different from the Greek used in the other countries.
